Riding is an art. Training is an experience. But both must continue to evolve with knowledge.
Our understanding of the equine athlete has advanced enormously. Research into locomotion, fascia, tensegrity, neuromuscular coordination and the complex interaction of forces throughout the horse's body continues to challenge older assumptions about how horses move and how they should be trained.
The question for every rider and trainer is therefore not simply:
“Does this method work?”
It is:
“Does what I am doing make sense for this horse?”
When Progress Stops
A horse may struggle with balance, coordination, straightness, impulsion or a movement that appears physically difficult. A rider may repeatedly attempt the same correction without achieving lasting improvement.
When this happens, the answer is not always to ask the horse for more.
Sometimes we must ask ourselves:
What are we missing?
Veterinary care, farriery, dentistry, physiotherapy and other appropriate professional care can all play important roles in the horse's health. But no therapy or treatment can substitute for schooling that respects the horse as an interconnected living system.
A problem observed in one area of the body may be the consequence of coordination elsewhere.
If the same difficulty continually returns, the training itself deserves examination.
Beyond Isolated Muscles and Joints
The horse does not move as a collection of independent parts.
Movement involves an extraordinary interaction of muscles, fascia, joints, elastic structures, neurological control and forces transmitted throughout the entire body.
This is where the concept of tensegrity becomes important.
Rather than looking only at the structure where a problem appears, tensegrity encourages us to consider how forces and tensions are distributed through the whole system.
The visible problem may not be the source of the problem.
For the rider and trainer, this changes the question from:
“How do I make the horse perform this movement?”
to:
“What coordination does this horse need in order to perform this movement correctly?”
That distinction is fundamental.
Understanding Before Correction
A rider should understand why an exercise is being used, what it is intended to change, and how that change relates to the individual horse.
An explanation should make sense.
A correction should have a purpose.
And correct schooling should progressively improve the horse's coordination, balance, comfort and ability.
Tradition has given equestrian sport an extraordinary foundation. Science allows us to examine that tradition more closely—to preserve what remains valid while having the courage to reconsider what new knowledge tells us can be improved.
